Many in our community benefit from the generosity of friends and neighbours for essential lifts so they can continue to live in their own home and community, but this is not always possible. Appin Community Transport has been running successfully for more than a year now, complementing those friendly neighbours, and helping people who need transport but may be more isolated. The service helps them to reach essential services and to generally get out and about – such as shopping, social and medical appointment trips. The passenger membership has grown steadily, as has the pool of volunteer drivers. Journeys have been local, to Oban and Fort William, and afar as Glasgow for hospital visits.
Could you be a volunteer driver? The scheme is scheduled to be “ON” 2 days each week – Tuesdays and Thursdays. It currently has a pool of 10 active volunteer drivers, which generally means each driver is “ON” around just once a month. In addition, we meet any needs for essential medical appointments on the other days of the week by drivers volunteering for specific journeys. Giving your time to be a volunteer can be very gratifying. Spending part of your day as a volunteer driver can be satisfying and rewarding.
