Appin Community Co-operative
The Co-op runs Port Appin Stores. Well-stocked with fresh, local foods and everyday groceries, the Stores are open 7 days: Mon-Sat 9am-5.30pm, Sun 10am-1pm and are at the heart of Appin community life.
The village shop: an essential service
The community co-op was formally set up as a friendly society company limited by guarantee in 1983. The co-op’s aim was to protect the village shop which was an essential service in our fragile community and to help develop the local economy.
We took over Port Appin Stores in 1984 and have gone on to build a popular and successful business with store profits being ploughed back into the community. Since 1991, store profits fund, in part, the charitable support work of the Appin Community Trust.
Popular, successful and co-operative
Coop membership is open to anyone with Appin’s interest at heart. Shares are fixed value at £50 each. One vote per shareholding (not per share). Shares are redeemable (as of right) upon leaving the area, death or hardship or at the discretion of the Management committee. Shareholders may apply for a shop account with the Manager’s agreement. Such accounts must be cleared monthly.
